Independent Coursework

Prof. Weber-Wulff compiled a hand-out about ICs, as Prüfungsausschussvorsitzende. (Mirror on my site) I find it highly informative. Please read it!

In addition to that, my specific rules about ICs are as follows:

  • You need to talk to me - preferably during the office hours (see below) - about your topic and register in LSF for the correct semester and course (IC1 or IC2). You will be rejected first and accepted later manually, please re-register as long as possible/necessary (Neuanmeldung). (Don’t ask. Or do ask learn about possible clashes of business processes and supporting IT.)

  • You need to maintain and hand in a timesheet documenting what you did for your IC (a simple excel sheet summing up hours and tasks will do) - it should be around 180 hrs according to the 6 ECTS.

  • You need to document your IC in a written report. Although there are no regulations regarding the report’s form, it’s generally a good idea to practice writing a paper or thesis with this report and thus do it in a similar form.

  • Grades will be done in each 2nd examination period. You need to register for the exam and present your IC to me (again, preferably during my office hours) and hand in your report at least two weeks before the end of the grading deadline.

§ 6 Inhalt und Gliederung des Masterstudiums/Regelstudienzeit Absatz 7 wird wie folgt neu gefasst: (7) Im zweiten und dritten Semester müssen sich die Studierenden selbständig im Modul Independent Coursework 1 bzw. 2 jeweils einem Themengebiet vertiefend zuwenden. “Independent Coursework” wird entweder als Individual Study, Individual Production, Supervised Research oder Interdisciplinary Project durchgeführt, die Entscheidung trifft der Prüfer/die Prüferin. a. Bei Individual Study wird den Studierenden am Anfang des Semesters eine Leseliste und ggf. Aufgaben zum Selbststudium übergeben, bzw. Zugang zu einem E- Learning-Angebot organisiert.

b. Der Bereich Individual Production umfasst praxisorientierte Projekte, bei denen die Erstellung von Anwendungen im Vordergrund steht.

c. Bei Supervised Research - der angeleiteten Forschung - wird den Studierenden von der Lehrkraft ein selbständig zu untersuchendes Forschungsthema vorgegeben, bzw. beteiligt sich der Studierende mit eigenständigen Leistungen an einem Forschungsprojekt eines Professors des Internationalen Studiengangs Medieninformatik (Master).

d) Bei Interdisciplinary Project erhalten die Studierenden die Möglichkeit, an Forschungs- oder Entwicklungsprojekten anderer Studiengänge der HTW aktiv teilzunehmen."
